Festive Journey of Literature: 'Book Train 2025'

In the heart of spring, a literary odyssey swept across central Russia, Belarus, and the Russian Volga region. This monumental event, christened 'Book Train', saw over 50 writers embarking on a journey to several major cities, as reported by PrimaMedia, citing data from TASS. The primary objective of this project, honoring the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, involved introducing readers to military literature and promoting reading as a whole.

The 'Book Train' initiative was brought to life with the support of the Russian Ministry of Culture, regional ministries of culture, the Russian Book Union, Russian Railways (RZD), and the Russian Ministry of Digital Development, Communications, and Mass Media. TASS served as the event's general information partner.

"Over the past decade since the Year of Literature in Russia was declared by President Vladimir Putin, numerous vibrant book projects, fairs, and festivals have emerged. The escalating interest in literature across the country has been increasingly recognized by regional media," observed Vladik Darmon, publisher and communication manager of the 'Book Train 2025' project, commenting on the momentous impact the declaration has had.

In 2023, Darmon took the helm as the ambassador of the 'Literary Beacons of Russia' festival movement (which encompasses 'Book Train' trips) at the 'Literature of the Pacific Russia' festival, held in Vladivostok. That year, he moderated a public discussion titled 'How Book Fairs Impact the Country's Book Industry.'

The 'Book Train' route this year was designed with the 80th anniversary of the Victory in mind, journeying 'from Leningrad to Stalingrad.' Denis Kotov, president of the 'Literary Beacons of Russia' movement, shared with TASS that the project's aim is to revive the names of forgotten authors of military prose and emphasize the importance of historical memory.

"Instilling a love for reading is the second and equally important task we've set for ourselves. We want 80% of our population to read at least 12 books annually," Kotov underscored.

This year's 'Book Train' schedule included over 100 events in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Minsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Ulyanovsk, and Volgograd, featuring creative workshops, plenary sessions, musical-poetic evenings, excursions, and author meetings. Maxim Afonenkov, the project's director, revealed that the events drew a crowd of more than 10,000 in total.

"The 'Book Train' serves not merely as an entertainment but also bridges different cultures and regions. The books traveling with the train symbolize unity and the exchange of ideas," Afonenkov expressed. "Our mission is to create a society that values knowledge, creativity, and dialogue. That's why it's essential to support this project and make it accessible to an even larger audience."

The 'Book Train' was initiated in 2008 as a literary express venture by the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications, and Mass Media of the Russian Federation and Russian Railways. In 2023, the train visited Vladivostok and several other cities in the Far East, including Ulan-Ude, Chita, and Khabarovsk.
