Women's Health Experts Outline Essential Preventive Care Guidelines

Women's health experts have outlined essential preventive care guidelines. These include regular vaccinations, screenings, and check-ups to maintain overall health and detect potential issues early.

Starting in their 20s, women should have two physicals, including assessments of height, weight, BMI, mental health, substance use, diet, exercise, vaccination history, and intimate partner violence. Additionally, they should get a Pap smear every three years to check for cervical cancer. A baseline screening for cholesterol levels and triglycerides is recommended every four to six years.

In their 40s, women should begin yearly breast exams by a healthcare provider. Women aged 21 and older should also consider an STD test based on individual risk factors and age recommendations. Regular dental exams and cleanings, once a year, are crucial for oral health.

From age 50 onwards, women should have a mammogram every other year to screen for breast cancer, with frequency varying based on age and family history. They should also start being screened for colon cancer, with various testing options available. Blood pressure should be checked every two years if it's 120/80 or under, and more often if higher. If diagnosed with high blood pressure, also screen for diabetes. Vision screenings are recommended every other year for those wearing contacts or glasses, or having vision concerns.

Vaccinations are vital for maintaining health. Get a tetanus-diphtheria booster every 10 years, starting sometime after age 19. A flu vaccine is recommended every year, especially for those over 65 or with risk factors for infection.

These guidelines emphasize the importance of regular preventive care for women. By following these recommendations, women can help ensure their health and detect potential issues early. It's crucial to consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice tailored to individual health needs.
