200 Years of Museum Island: A Fun-Filled Anniversary Bash! 🎉

Multitude of Attendees at the Weekend Festival Held on the Museum Isle - Weekend Attendees Crowd Museum Island Festival

Stepping into its bicentennial year, Museum Island in Berlin-Mitte kickstarted the celebration with a lively weekend full of music, talks, and guided tours! Between Friday and Sunday, the vibrant island welcomed thousands of visitors who flocked to concerts in the colonnade courtyard or embarked on one of the 70 insightful tours to soak up the history and architecture of the island.

Matthias Wemhoff, the island's vibrant spokesperson, reported a whopping 55,000 visitors and declared the weekend a massive success. He commended the joyous atmosphere, amplified by the open-air stage program, featuring a mix of spoken word and tunes that kept everyone grooving.

On Sunday, the official celebration for UNESCO World Heritage Day took place. Marion Ackermann, the newly appointed president of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPD), addressed the crowd. She underlined the importance of conserving Museum Island and nurturing it to attract various audience groups. "With the Pergamon Museum renovations in full swing, exciting times are ahead—we're not just counting years; we're counting down the months until we walk through the stunning altar hall again!" Ackermann exclaimed.

The commemoration of Museum Island is a five-year extravaganza, with each museum taking center stage annually. This year will beam the spotlight on the Old Museum, the classic island building. As we turn the corner to 2026, the highlight will shift to the Old National Gallery, which will mark its 150th birthday. 2027 will be all about the reopening of the renovated Pergamon Museum, followed by the Bode Museum in 2029. The festivities will culminate in 2030 with an all-inclusive, grand celebration of all the buildings.
