Volunteers wanted in Alexandria for bike-based food delivery within the farmers market program
In the heart of Old Town, Alexandria, the Bike for Good program is making a difference by delivering food to residents in need. This unique initiative, which takes place as the Old Town Farmers Market is closing down, has been active during the gleaning season from May to early November.
During this period, up to 10 local vendors generously donate bread, fruits, and vegetables, which are collected from the market outside City Hall (301 King Street). Volunteers then collect, weigh, and load the donated food into carts attached to bicycles for delivery.
The program is open to anyone with a bike and a great attitude. To sign up for the Bike for Good program, please contact [email protected]. The city provides a time frame for volunteer deliveries, with activities taking place between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
The Bike for Good program is more than just a community initiative; it's also a way to help those less fortunate. The donated items are used as a donation to seniors and those in need. Deliveries are made to various locations, including the Annie B. Rose house and Christ Church.
