Vibrant Everlasting Plants

In the world of gardening, perennials are a popular choice for those seeking resilient and long-lasting plants. These plants, which live for multiple seasons, are the focus of several upcoming events and resources in Santa Clara County, California.

Richard Wilford has recently authored a book titled "Home Grown Gardening Best Perennials for Sun and Shade", providing valuable insights for gardeners. Similarly, Andrew McIndoe's book "Essential Perennials" is another comprehensive guide that can be found on the Santa Clara County Library's website.

For those eager to learn more about perennials, the "Green Thumb" program, led by a Santa Clara County Master Gardener, offers a monthly video lecture series. This month, Valerie Depew, another Santa Clara County Master Gardener, will be discussing powerful perennials and answering questions.

In addition to these resources, there's an event later this month called "Meet the Gardeners in the Garden". At this event, patrons can meet volunteers from the Clear Lake Native Plant Society and learn about native gardening. Aquatic milkweed seeds will be available at the event while supplies last.

The Clear Lake Native Plant Society has also transformed many raised beds into a native/perennial plant showcase at the Evelyn Meador Branch Library. These beds feature native and perennial plants curated by the society, including species such as Texas sage, bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, Gulf Coast muhly grass, and blackfoot daisy.

Perennials, while more expensive per plant than annuals, are known for their resilience. They can survive the winter by going dormant and growing new shoots in the spring. In southeast Texas, perennials are generally planted in the Fall and early Spring.

For those interested in books on perennials, "The Kew Gardener's Guide to Growing Perennials" by Ruth Rogers Clausen is another valuable resource available on the Santa Clara County Library's website.

Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, these resources and events offer a wealth of information and opportunities to learn more about perennials. Don't miss out on the chance to enhance your garden with these hardy and beautiful plants.
