Underground blaze engulfs a private home in Dortmund
At around 4:25 AM on a recent morning, a fire broke out in a single-family home on Hohenfriedbergstraße. The fire department was quick to respond, deploying several vehicles and around 40 personnel to the scene.
The residents of the home had previously noticed an unusual smell of smoke. When the smell became more pronounced, they promptly called the emergency services. Upon arrival, the fire department initiated an escalation of the alarm to deploy additional forces for fire fighting and ventilation.
The fire team in breathing apparatus found a washing machine and a dryer on fire in a utility room in the basement. The fire started in the basement, with smoke spreading to the living areas above via the basement stairs. Thankfully, no persons were injured during the operation.
Major damage was prevented due to the swift and coordinated intervention of the rescue forces. An overpressure ventilation was carried out to clear the building of smoke, extending over all floors. The fire was quickly brought under control and completely extinguished.
The person responsible for investigating the origin of the home fire on Hohenfriedbergstraße is the criminal investigation emergency service (Kriminaldauerdienst), which secured traces and dismantled the fuse box as part of the investigation. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
