Traditional Russian Methods Protect Fruit Trees From Autumn Pests

Russian horticulturists have long known how to protect fruit trees from autumnal pests. Methods developed in the late 19th to early 20th century remain effective today.

To safeguard your garden, treat fruit trees for insects at the end of the fruiting season in October. This timing ensures the trees are protected before the winter chill sets in.

One proven method involves wrapping the tree trunk with aluminium foil. Start about 20 cm from the ground, secure it with twine, and tie a tight knot. This barrier prevents insects from climbing up the tree.

For added protection, fold the top edge of the foil closer to the branches and crown. This creates a 'roof', further deterring ants from climbing onto the tree or carrying aphids to it.

By following these traditional methods, gardeners can effectively protect their fruit trees from autumnal pests. The wrapping process, combined with timely insect treatment, ensures a healthy start for trees as they prepare for the winter.
