Neuwied Celebrates Fair Trade Achievements
Neuwied, a city in Germany, has been recognised as a Fairtrade Town since 2018, demonstrating its commitment to ethical sourcing and promoting fair trade practices. This status was achieved by meeting specific criteria that include local council support, stocking Fairtrade products in shops and cafes, using Fairtrade products by community organisations, and raising awareness through events and media coverage.
The latest event held in the city center aimed to draw attention to the topic of fair trade in Neuwied and encourage citizens to participate and support fair trade. Despite the rainy weather, the event was reported to have been well-received. An information stand and a wheel of fortune focused on fair trade were the main attractions.
The wheel of fortune at the event was partially funded by Fairtrade Germany, with the rest coming from the Neuwied One World Shop. The Fairtrade District Neuwied, along with the steering groups of Fairtrade Town Neuwied, presented their work during the event.
Wolfgang Rahn, spokesperson for the steering group, emphasized that every contribution, whether through active participation or conscious decision for fair-trade products, is important. Alena Borhardt from the Fairtrade Town steering group reported that the sensitization of citizens to the importance of fair trade and sustainable consumption is crucial.
Networking various actors at the municipal level remains important in Neuwied's fair trade efforts. This includes collaboration with Fairtrade Germany and the Neuwied One World Shop.
