The lowdown:
Thuringia boasts more than half of Germany's Green Belt, a 1400-kilometer-long former inner-German border strip, now transformed into a nature refuge and remnant of German division. The region has been elevated to a natural monument in Thuringia.
Following the launch of official campsites for campers near Lichtenhain in Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district last year, the ministry has unveiled plans for three additional offerings in 2025:
- Rhön Forest Experience World edge, Kaltennordheim (Schmalkalden-Meiningen district),
- Truckendorf, near Schalkau (Sonneberg district),
- Generalsblick on the Isaak, Frankenblick community (Sonneberg district).
Escape the tourist horde
The initiative has been a collaborative effort between the Ministry of the Environment, the Nature Conservation Foundation, and the Thuringian Nature Friends. The campsites will feature basic accommodations in nature, providing a respite from busy tourist crowds.
"These no-nonsense abodes serve as an ideal starting or ending point for hikes along the Green Belt or in the national natural landscapes," said Environment Minister Tilo Kummer (56, BSW). "Thuringia's wilderness has a lot of hidden gems." The goal is in uShining and nature-friendly tourism.
A dedicated booking platform for trekking adventures in Thuringia offers a simple way to reserve your spot. Each campsite can accommodate up to five tents for two people each, placed upon ground or wooden platforms. Nightly bookings are the norm, and stays are limited to one night.
Anja Zachow of the Thuringian Nature Friends adds that there are other trekking sites in the Free State at Blankenstein (Saale-Orla district), the Rhön Arche, and the Geopfad Pinsenberg in Krölpa (Saale-Orla district).
The Green Belt is a mosaic of various biotopes, hosting over 1200 endangered species of plants and animals, as well as preserving the patrol road and the watchtowers once used by DDR border guards.
