The Martins' relocation strategy

Article:

Every year, St. Martin's Day processions take place in Dormagen and surrounding regions to honor the beloved saint. Although St. Martin was never officially canonized, he is incredibly popular, particularly among children who participate by carrying homemade or store-bought lanterns through the evening streets.

Martin, born in present-day Hungary, was the third bishop of Tours, France. He is widely recognized as one of the most significant saints in the Catholic Church, having been the first to be honored as a confessor rather than a martyr. St. Martin is also revered in Orthodox, Anglican, and Protestant churches.

A legend tells the story of how, in 371, the inhabitants of Tours wished to appoint Martin as their bishop, but he felt unworthy and hid in a pigsty. The noisy geese gave him away, forcing him to accept the office. This tale is thought to be the source of the custom of preparing a goose on St. Martin's Day.

The legend of the Mass of St. Martin, depicted in the High Altar of Cologne Cathedral, recounts the time he gave his cloak to a beggar and the new one he bought had too short sleeves. During the Mass, he was beautifully adorned by angels, and a beam of light shone down on him.
