TenarisSilcotub Finishes Building a 20 MW Solar Park Directly at the Steel Plant in Călărași for Self-Powering Operations
Get ready to hear some fantastic news from Romania! TenarisSilcotub, the country's leading small-diameter seamless pipe manufacturer, has taken a giant leap towards sustainability. They've officially completed construction on their groundbreaking 20 MW photovoltaic park - a green achievement made possible by an impressive $21.5 million investment.
Mihaela Popescu, Tenaris' Eastern Europe, North Sea, and Sub-Saharan Africa president, shared her enthusiasm, "This investment is a testament to our unrelenting dedication to staying competitive in the European and global markets, especially considering the skyrocketing energy prices that have hit consumers hard, particularly in Romania. Not only does this project help us offer our customers eco-friendly products, but it also actively aids in transitioning to a cleaner energy landscape."
TenarisSilcotub's solar energy powerhouse was funded through two sources: company funds and non-reimbursable European grants from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. These grants, part of the Pillar I - Green Transition - Component C6. Energy, support investments in solar and wind energy production capacities [1][2]. This power-packed installation will primarily supply energy for the steel plant's internal consumption, thereby streamlining the production process and fostering a more eco-conscious approach.
As Popescu further explained, the support from national and local authorities played a vital role in the project's success. She smiled, "This partnership paved the way for implementing this innovative, sustainable solution."
With the new solar energy facility humming away, the steel plant will see a marked reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, bringing them one step closer to their ambitious 30% emissions reduction target by 2030, compared to 2018 levels. This commitment also involves the increased use of scrap metal and alternative materials, driving a steel production process with up to 98% recycled content [3].
