Showcase of Innovative Library Designs in 2025

The annual 2025 Library Design Showcase, hosted by American Libraries, is a celebration of new and renovated libraries in North America. This year's showcase features a diverse range of libraries, each designed to connect, educate, and foster growth among diverse communities.

In New York, the Oceanside Library underwent a significant renovation and expansion. The library now boasts two hydraulic elevators, making it more accessible to all, and new amenities such as a STEM workshop and cafe.

The Lake Travis Community Library West in Spicewood, Texas, underwent a renovation of 5,000 square feet at a cost of $4.6 million.

In Arizona, the Labriola National American Indian Data Center at Arizona State University in Tempe was renovated with a size of 4,006 square feet and a cost of $715,000.

The Mearns Centre-McPherson Library at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, underwent a massive renovation with a size of 240,000 square feet and a cost of $1 million Canadian (approximately $758,000 US). The architectural group responsible for the design of this new building is Jensen Chernoff Thompson Architects.

The Denver Public Library's Central Library underwent renovation, focusing on safety, security, and modernizing programs and services. The creation of the Park View Room offers panoramic views of Civic Center Park and the Denver skyline.

The new Clark Family branch in St. Louis County, Missouri, includes the Emerson History and Genealogy Center, housing the library's extensive genealogy and local history collection.

The Downtown Main Library in Cincinnati and Hamilton County, Ohio, was renovated to serve as a gathering place in the heart of the business district, celebrating local arts and music.

In Colorado, the Samuel Freudenthal Memorial Library at Trinidad State College underwent renovation, offering various learning environments, including a new makerspace and a revamped lower level housing the Louden-Henritze Archaeology Museum.

The Donelson branch in Nashville, Tennessee, was built with a focus on sustainability, using geothermal heating and cooling systems, solar panels, and a green roof.

The new Deschutes Public Library, Redmond (Ore.) Library is a new construction with a size of 40,000 square feet and a cost of $43 million.

The Pacific Highlands Ranch Library in San Diego was built as a new construction, inspired by the area's agrarian past, featuring glass walls that retract for indoor-outdoor events.

The Shannon Walker Neighborhood Library in Houston, Texas is a new construction with a size of 23,260 square feet and a cost of $16.3 million.

Lastly, the Martin Luther King Jr. Library in Atlanta, Georgia underwent renovation with a size of 4,224 square feet and a cost of $983,375.

Each of these libraries stands as a testament to the importance of libraries in our communities, providing spaces for learning, connection, and growth. The 2025 Library Design Showcase serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to improve and modernise these essential institutions.
