The small town of Wersten in Germany was filled with festive cheer as it hosted its second annual Christmas tree throwing competition and a series of winter events at the Glühwein hut in Grünanlage.

On Saturday, 4th January, over 150 attendees gathered to witness the traditional event, which has been a popular custom in Weidenthal for 16 years. The competition, organised by hut owner Dirk Rauchmann, saw participants bringing their decorated natural trees to take part. Before the competition began, a little eggnog was served, setting the festive mood.

The event was not just about the competition. It included a variety of activities, making it a true winter celebration. The attendees enjoyed culinary offerings, an Advent sing-along, and special Christmas traditions, similar to the custom of eating sweets from the Christmas tree on the 6th of January. The band Fuchs&Fertig, who gained many fans during the sing-along, provided musical entertainment spontaneously.

The Glühwein hut, which has been a meeting point for residents since November 20, 2024, aimed to collect donations for the people affected by the 2021 flood disaster in the Ahr region. Wine from the Ahr region was offered, with the Glühwein hut aiming to raise funds through the sales.

Outside of the Advent season, the Kultur Bud Wersten initiative is starting a new project in Wersten. This includes organising Glühwein hikes, a new addition to the town's winter activities. Registration for the three new Glühwein hike dates will soon be possible.

The event concluded with a "everything must go" motto, ensuring that no drinks were left behind. Photos of the event were taken by Dirk Schmidt.

As the winter season comes to an end, a small winter running series is being planned, with more details available. The Glühwein hut in Wersten will continue to be a focal point for community gatherings and festive celebrations.
