Seal of the elephant species found ashore once more, sighted now in Simon's Town this time.
A residentially-unusual sighting has occurred in Gordon's Bay, Cape Town - a Southern elephant seal, popularly known as Gordy, has reappeared in a new location: the Naval Base in Simon's Town. The animal is currently in a secure zone, as confirmed by the SPCA, poseing no immediate danger to its well-being.
City officials and an SPCA inspector are present, keeping a close watch on the marine mammal, who is merely resting, according to the wildlife organization. Nevertheless, they remain vigilant and ready to intervene if needed.
This is hardly the first time Gordy has ventured ashore, but his decision to lounge near a bustling neighborhood surprised residents and raised concerns, as he had temporarily occupied a spot along Sir Lowry's Pass Road in the past.
In the previous incident, multiple agencies collaborated to execute a nine-hour rescue mission, ensuring the seal's safety and transfer to a more fitting coastal environment. Despite his size, the sub-adult male elephant seal is not native to residential areas.
Southern elephant seals, identified as the world's largest seal species, are typically found in sub-Antarctic regions. Occasionally, young male seals will make their way along South Africa's coastline during moulting or rest phases, but such sightings remain relatively rare.
The cause of Gordy's wayward journey is not entirely clear. Factors such as disorientation, environmental changes, health concerns, human activity, and curiosity may have played a role in bringing him into a residential neighborhood.
Local authorities and numerous collaborative agencies worked diligently to ensure the safety of both Gordy and motorists during this incident. They secured the area, diverted traffic, and orchestrated the transport of the animal back to a more suitable location.
Residents encountering wildlife in urban areas are encouraged to avoid approaching, feeding, or attempting to assist them, instead contacting the Cape of Good Hope SPCA for assistance.
Despite the Southern elephant seal, Gordy, frequently choosing unconventional locations, such as the Naval Base or along Sir Lowry's Pass Road, his latest lifestyle shift toward home-and-garden zones of residential areas is unusual and concerning. The home-and-garden environment is not a suitable habitat for the large lifestyle of a southern elephant seal, making it essential for residents to contact the Cape of Good Hope SPCA if they encounter wildlife in urban areas.
