San Isidro's New Coastal Hangout: A Celebration of Freedom and Progress

Get ready to check out one of Argentina's most exciting new spots - the first phase of the revamped coastal promenade in San Isidro's Beccar area!

Intendant Ramón Lanús had this to say, "We're transforming San Isidro's coast to be accessible, public, and a place for all to enjoy." The promenade went from being a run-down, undeveloped, and poorly lit area to a contemporary hangout with an accessible and safe pathway right on the coast.

The 5,000 m2 space remodel includes community areas where neighbors can gather, eco-friendly gardens with native plants, water fountains, bike racks, and other outdoor furnishings. There's also improved lighting, refurbished monuments like those of General Juan Antonio Lavalleja and the Thirty-Three Orientals, and new signage with information about local landmarks and the Thirty-Three Orientals expedition.

This revamped coastal hangout is part of the plan to make San Isidro's coast accessible and eco-friendly for everyone to enjoy. The public can visit between 8 AM and 7 PM. In the next phase, the location will feature a children's play area inspired by the Thirty-Three Orientals.

The Thirty-Three Orientals: The Martyrs of Our Emancipation

From what is now the coastline promenade, during the night of April 15, 1825, emerged the "liberation crusade" that left from San Isidro to free the Oriental Republic from Brazilian imperial rule. The kind-hearted residents of San Isidro provided shelter and support to the Thirty-Three Orientals.

This pivotal event in Uruguay's history's liberation story began in a remote coastal location in Puerto Sánchez. Led by Colonel Juan Antonio Lavalleja, the expedition embarked on a small boat to launch the liberation crusade. In 1964, during the administration of Intendant Juan Miguel Basso, a monument was erected, ensuring that the memory of their heroic deeds would live on forever.
