Residential disputes in Blankenese: determining the eligible residents for contested social housing units
The city of Blankenese is set to welcome a new addition to its landscape, as construction work on a new social housing development at Björnsonweg 39 is nearing completion. The project, overseen by the city's Fördern und Wohnen company, is scheduled for completion in June 2026.
The development, spanning approximately 3,500 square meters, will consist of 38 social security units, designed with energy efficiency in mind. Three of these buildings will be constructed as "Efficiency House 40", featuring special insulation and a heat recovery system.
The apartments, suitable for households of one to five persons, will be equipped with solar panels on their roofs to generate green energy. This move towards renewable energy is part of the city's commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.
The site, previously occupied by a refugee accommodation, was demolished in 2023 following strong opposition from local residents. The residents' opposition to the refugee accommodation made headlines in the news, with some attempting to block the necessary tree felling with cars.
The cost of the construction is estimated at around 12 million euros, with the apartments to be publicly funded for urgent housing seekers. The first windows and brick facades are expected to be installed this week, marking a significant milestone in the project's progress.
The completion of these social security units is a positive step towards addressing the city's housing needs, providing a much-needed boost to the local community. The exact residents who will move into these units from June 2026 have not yet been publicly specified.
Construction work on Björnsonweg 39 in Blankenese has been ongoing since March 2023, and the community looks forward to welcoming these new homes in the coming months.
