Reopened in Munich: a peek at the menu of a historical eatery

The historic "Wirtshaus" Beim Sedlmayr, a staple on Munich's Viktualienmarkt, has undergone a revitalising transformation. Originally built between 1902 and 1904, the building's historic facade has been preserved, allowing it to fully open in good weather, offering diners a unique al fresco experience.

The restaurant, made famous by its namesake Walter Sedlmayr, has expanded its dining room during the renovation, providing more space for patrons to enjoy their meals. The interior now boasts light furniture, a mosaic floor made of Isar stones, and cast iron elements, adding a touch of elegance to the establishment.

Philipp Richter, who took over the kitchen last year, is in charge of the culinary offerings. Richter cooks Bavarian cuisine, but with a modern, light, and fresh twist. Some of the popular dishes include the veal sweetbreads with root vegetables, capers, and dumplings (27 euros), the veal liver (with mashed potatoes and candied lemon, 27 euros), and an alternative for vegetarians, the Topfen mousse with ice cream and plums (14 euros).

Beer lovers will be pleased to know that the restaurant serves Paulaner brews, with a half liter of Helles costing 5.70 euros. The bars and toilets were moved from the ground floor to the basement during the renovation, ensuring a more streamlined dining experience.

A piece of the old city wall can be seen within the restaurant, paying homage to the building's rich history. The Kuffler family, who took over the inn last year, have worked diligently to preserve and enhance the restaurant's charm.

The "Beim Sedlmayr" continues to be a cherished institution in Munich, offering diners a taste of traditional Bavarian cuisine in a modern setting. The restaurant is located at Westenriederstraße 14 and is open from Monday to Thursday: 10 am to 11 pm, and Friday to Saturday: 10 am to 11:30 pm.

The restaurant, now under the management of the Kuffler family, offers a modern twist on traditional Bavarian cuisine, making it an ideal spot for those seeking a unique food-and-drink experience. Home-and-garden enthusiasts will appreciate the preserved historic facade, providing a charming backdrop for their dining experience.
