Renovation of Königstrasse in Nuremberg has commenced
The city of Nuremberg is set to transform its iconic Königstraße into an inviting pedestrian zone, following the approval of the redesign plan by the city planning committee on September 18, 2025.
The redesign, which was initially provisionally designated as a new pedestrian zone with modified traffic regulations in 2021, has now been made permanent by the traffic committee in July 2023.
Immediate measures, such as the placement of seating benches and large planters with trees, have already been implemented to support the goal of making Königstraße more perceptible as a pedestrian zone and improving the quality of stay.
The second construction phase of the redesign includes more greenery and new city furniture. Four new green seating areas in the form of large wooden decks will be created on the southwest side of Königstraße, similar to successful city furniture at the Weinmarkt. These new seating areas are designed to create plaza-like areas and invite visitors to linger and explore.
The newly approved tree locations will be integrated into the full-scale third phase. Existing tree locations on the northeast side of Königstraße will be supplemented by an avenue of trees. Trees and beds are being added to improve the urban climate of Königstraße.
The redesign aims to create a diverse and multifunctional place for all target groups, meeting the requirements of an attractive downtown area. The existing green spaces in Königstraße will be significantly expanded, and new tree locations will be integrated to enhance the overall aesthetic appeal.
While the possible color design for parts of Königstraße is still being detailed, comprehensive construction work, such as leveling out with new paving, will take place in a later third phase.
This transformation of Königstraße is expected to make it a more appealing and comfortable destination for both locals and tourists, fostering a sense of community and promoting a vibrant urban lifestyle.
