Redesigning the layout of your workspace
In the heart of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, a unique workspace known as the "clock office" is tucked away. This office space, which serves as a haven for a clock enthusiast, has been the centre of the writer's work on clocks and composition of articles.
The office, originally an upstairs bedroom, underwent a transformation in 2017, evolving into a more usable workspace. In the early days, the work desk was lost amidst the room, but over the years, it has found its place. In 2020, the desk was moved to a more central location, and the computer was relocated adjacent to a window, bringing in natural light.
To optimise space for a growing collection of clocks, the user has employed a combination of vertical and wall-mounted storage solutions. Narrow or tall shelving units display multiple clocks vertically, saving desk surface area and avoiding bulky wide fixtures that crowd the space. Clocks are also mounted on the wall at or above desk level, making use of otherwise underutilised vertical space.
Floating shelves or pegboards provide additional space for clocks to be securely placed and artfully arranged without consuming desk area or floor space. Compact, stylish clocks, such as word clocks or slender analog desk clocks, fit neatly on these shelves or desks without dominating the space.
Wall-mounted cabinets or trays just behind or above the desk hold less frequently used clocks or clock accessories, keeping the desk clear. A light, bright colour palette for walls and shelves, and the strategic placement of mirrors, reflect light and further enhance the sense of openness, making the room feel more spacious and easier to move around.
Despite the office's small size, it is a testament to the power of effective space utilisation and the beauty of a well-curated clock collection. The user has no intention of moving beyond this office space, content with the current organisation and visual appeal it offers. The clock office, a labour of love, continues to tick away, marking the passage of time in its unique and charming way.
