Community Gardening Takes Root in Benckiser Park, Pforzheim

Six raised beds have been installed in Benckiser Park, offering a new opportunity for local residents to showcase their gardening skills. These beds, designed with accessibility in mind, include two specifically for wheelchair users, making gardening more inclusive for all.

The project, a collaboration between various departments and agencies, was carried out using upcycling methods. The beds were created from the former school fence of Nordstadt School, as part of a community initiative.

The Pastor and Community Leader of the Volksmission Matthias Brandtner Pforzheim, along with the Green Space and Civil Engineering Department of the City of Pforzheim, were involved in the project. The team of Grünwerk, a part of the "BIWAQ WIN.Pf - Perspectives promote" funded neighborhood management at Q-Prints&Service, supported and guided the project. The Technical Services of the City of Pforzheim and the social employment agency Q-Prints&Service GmbH also contributed to the effort.

Thomas Schäfer, project manager at Grünwerk, will ensure the beds are maintained all year round and provide support wherever it is needed. The beds, which are of different heights to accommodate gardeners of all ages, are located in front of the Benckiser Hall.

For those interested in planting the raised beds with herbs, strawberry plants, and more, contact can be made at [email protected]. The beds are jointly managed and cared for by the city and the Volksmission.

Community gardens are often managed by local city councils, neighborhood associations, or volunteer groups. For the most accurate and up-to-date information about the Benckiser Park community garden, it is recommended to contact the Pforzheim city administration or local gardening clubs directly. They typically provide details on management, how to access the garden, and points of contact.

This project was described as a successful example of upcycling by Sandra Heitkamp, head of the Green Space and Civil Engineering Department. The creation of the raised beds serves as an example of sustainability through upcycling, which involves creating new objects from old products.

The community garden in Benckiser Park, Pforzheim, now offers a variety of home-and-garden opportunities for local residents, as they can showcase their gardening skills in the newly installed raised beds. These beds, designed to cater to all lifestyles, include wheelchair-accessible spaces, enabling inclusivity in gardening.
