Magdeburg to Experience Week-Long Rail Underpass Closure

Beginning next Monday, June 2nd, the Hallische Straße railway underpass in Magdeburg will be closed for three weeks, causing multiple line disruptions within the city. Magdeburger Verkehrsbetriebe GmbH & Co. KG (MVB) has adapted numerous services to accommodate the closure.

To ease the burden on passengers, MVB is launching a promotional fare offer. From June 1st to August 31st, the 24-hour ticket in the FAIRTIQ app will cost just 3 euros, offering passengers unlimited trips within the city of Magdeburg.

"We understand that the ongoing construction work in the city center is challenging for our passengers," says MVB Managing Director Birgit Münster-Rendel. "In response, we're not only offering good information, alternative travel options, and increased digital access, but also providing financial relief. This promotional action aims to reward those who choose public transportation during this time."

Tram lines 1, 4, 9, and 10, along with several night lines, will be particularly affected by the closure. Passengers are encouraged to visit the MVB's website for all current information about line changes and updated timetables.

Various adjustments will be implemented, including:

  • The Warschauer Straße will serve as the last remaining east-west connection for trams.
  • Not all lines can be rerouted due to insufficient vehicle reserves and single-track operations at Buckau station.
  • Passengers from Diesdorf and Stadtfeld can use the connection to Damaschkeplatz / Adelheidring / ZOB and continue via the pedestrian connection through the main station to the Hauptbahnhof / Willy-Brandt-Platz stop as an alternative.
  • Passengers from Olvenstedt, Sudenburg, Leipziger Straße, and Reform can still reach the city center without changing.
  • The departure times of all lines will change.

Lines 1 and 4 will be divided and interconnected, with Line 1 running from Sudenburg to Damaschkeplatz / Adelheidring / ZOB in the west and south, while Line 1 in the north and east will run from Kannenstieg to Alter Markt. Line 3 will operate between Diesdorf and Olvenstedter Platz via Damaschkeplatz / Adelheidring / ZOB, while Line 5 and Line 6 will resume their regular service. Line 9 and Line 10 will continue to bypass the closure via S-Bahnhof Buckau.

Replacement bus service Line 47 will be set up for the stops Jordanstraße, Halberstädter / Leipziger Straße, and Am Fuchsberg, connecting to Lines 5, 9, and 10 at S-Bahnhof Buckau. Bus lines 59, N3, N4, and N5 will bypass Hallische Straße via Carl-Miller-Straße.

From June 21st, Hallische Straße is expected to reopen for tram traffic, making for more direct and faster connections. For the latest updates, passengers are advised to visit the MVB's official website or download the MVB Verkehrsapp.

More information about the closure of the Hallische Straße railway underpass is being provided by Deutsche Bahn as part of ongoing railway overpass works. The existing closure of the Ringbrücke at Damaschkeplatz remains in effect due to detected structural defects.

  1. The closure of the Hallische Straße railway underpass in Magdeburg is anticipated to impact several sectors, including the transportation industry as public-transit services will be disrupted.
  2. In response to the challenges posed by the underpass closure, Magdeburger Verkehrsbetriebe GmbH & Co. KG (MVB) has launched a promotional offer for its passengers, lowering the cost of the 24-hour ticket within the city to 3 euros, making a multi-faceted lifestyle change more feasible, even during home-and-garden renovations.
  3. Amid the closure of the railway underpass, passengers will need to adapt their travel plans, as affected tram lines, such as 1, 4, 9, and 10, will be divided and rerouted to ensure continuity of service, rendering the lifestyle modifications less burdensome for residents in Magdeburg.
