A Pope's Footprints in Our Backyard: Papal Visits to Rhineland-Palatinate
Event Analysis: Carnival Festival Examination - Pope's visit to the country accompanied by a study session, mass, and fasting events.
Let's dive into the occasions when those Holy Father figures graced our Rhineland-Palatinate soil, whether in reality or as a lively Carnival float! Many locals haven't met their Holiness face-to-face during their lifetime. The Papa-show in Germany has been scarce, with the Catholic Church heads visiting our land a handful of times—and even fewer times in Rhineland-Palatinate.
Will a change occur with the new Pope Leo XIV from the US? With locations like the US air bases in Ramstein and Spangdahlem, the US garrison town of Baumholder, and given the past visits by two Popes in the '80s, it's quite possible!
The Magic of John Paul II in Mainz and Speyer
Mainz: A Heartwarming Encounter
The very first Pope to set foot on German soil in 198 years was John Paul II, who visited Rhineland-Palatinate from November 15 to 19, 1980. He met with Cardinal Hermann Volk and Karl Lehmann in Mainz, drove through the crowds in his Popemobile and even shared a few quips about the weather: "It's a different kinda rain than in Italy."
Speyer: A Holy Pilgrimage
Returning in 1987, John Paul II visited Speyer, where he blessed two witnesses of faith from the Nazi era and celebrated Mass with a whopping 60,000 believers in front of the cathedral. His sermon urged the creation of a united Europe from the Atlantic to the Ural, "in responsibility before God and with respect for all fundamental values and rights."
A special visit indeed, lasting barely seven hours in Speyer. Back in the day, the then-bishop, Anton Schlembach, called it a "century event for the cathedral city and the whole diocese" before the visit, and the Pope offered gratitude for the hospitality in a telegram after his trip.
Four Decades Without a Visit
Our province has not seen a Pope's presence since then. Any soul under the age of 38 hasn't experienced a Pope visit in Rhineland-Palatinate.
However, Benedict XVI has managed to visit Germany a few times, even though Rhineland-Palatinate didn't get the privilege. Our Mainz brothers immortalized the Pope in the Rosenmontag parade, where Pope Francis sends ultra-conservative Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller soaring on a rocket.
Before he became Pope, Jorge Mario Bergoglio—better known as Pope Francis—visited Rhineland-Palatinate when he studied at the Goethe-Institut in Boppard in 1985. He even lived with a local family, the Schmidt's, and worked on a theology project that he never completed.
A Pope in Neighboring Luxembourg
Life has remained a bit far from Rhineland-Palatinate as of late. Nevertheless, in September 2024, Luxembourg will welcome Pope Francis, with fellow believers from Germany joining the festivities. As always, he'll roll through the capital in his Popemobile.
A Private Meeting of the Minds
And if the Pope doesn't come to Rhineland-Palatinate, we'll go to the Pope! That's likely what Minister-President Alexander Schweitzer (SPD) thought, who traveled to Rome for a private audience with the Pope in the beginning of the year. It was a long-held wish fulfilled, with the SPD politician sharing that it was a "special day" for him personally.
