Poland Launches €45M Thermo-Modernization Program to Combat Energy Inefficiency and Pollution

Poland has taken a significant step towards improving energy efficiency with a nationwide thermo-modernization program, backed by €45 million in funding. Meanwhile, the government's response to air pollution, a pressing issue that claims 48,000 lives annually, has been criticized for its sluggish pace and disorganization.

The prime minister announced the thermo-modernization program, aiming to enhance energy efficiency and insulation across the country. This initiative comes amidst growing concern over Poland's air quality, which is among the worst in the EU. The Polish government has faced criticism for its slow response to air pollution, with the previous environment minister even responsible for the destruction of part of the Białowieża Forest.

Grassroots movements like Krakow Smog Alert have driven anti-smog initiatives, pushing for stricter regulations. The Ministry for Enterprise and Technology, now led by Jadwiga Emilewicz and Piotr Wożny, is responsible for anti-smog policy. While the government has introduced boiler quality regulations, it has been slow to implement coal quality standards. The Court of Justice of the EU has ruled that Poland must take immediate measures to improve air quality, with potential penalties of up to €300,000 per day for exceeding particulate matter (PM) standards.

The thermo-modernization program is a positive step towards reducing Poland's energy consumption and carbon footprint. However, the government must accelerate its efforts to combat air pollution, as the health of its citizens and compliance with EU laws demand urgent action.
