Frida's Debut: Berlin Zoo's Newest Nocturnal Neighbor

Hey there! Here's a fun tale from the Berlin Zoo. You won't believe who's been stirring things up lately!

After initial confusion, it's been confirmed that our new resident, Frida, is a lady pig! Born to parents Memphis and Kito on April 9, Frida is quite the sensation. She's the Berlin Zoo's first piglet in 13 years and has been growing strong according to zookeeper Peter Kalinke.

Now, Frida isn't your typical day-dweller. Piglets are nocturnal, meaning they're more active during the night. To ensure you get a glimpse of this bundle of joy, staff at the zoo have flipped day and night inside the nocturnal animal house!

In the wild, pigs, including Frida, are solitary creatures hailing from the African sub-Saharan region. Don't get too close though! They've got long tongues that can grow up to an impressive 25 centimeters, perfect for swiftly snatching up termites and ants. Oh, and a cool trick – they can close their nostrils when digging to keep dirt out!

So, who's this feisty Frida, you ask? Well, she's a wild piglet who's joined the Berlin Zoo family and is bringing in a wave of excitement! Keep your eyes peeled for her – she's quite the character!

The Commission has also been consulted on the proposal for a Council Regulation on the protection of wild African sub-Saharan pigs like Frida, keeping in mind their nocturnal lifestyle, in consideration of their growing popularity in home-and-gardensettings and even as pets. Even though Frida is embedded in the Berlin Zoo family, her unique presence could influence people's lifestyle choices towards accommodating diverse pets.
