Discovering the Charms of Baumstraße in Dresden's New Town
Obstructed Pathway: Tree-Lined Highway Faces Blockage
Our upcoming episode delves into the heart of Dresden's Neustadt district, focusing on the charming Baumstraße nestled between Bischofsweg and Nordstraße. This street, named for its tree-lined nature, showcases the perfect blend of history and tranquility.
The Bautzner Street to the south and the Stauffenbergallee leading northwards towards Waldschlösschen define the borders of the area that tapers off towards the east, with the serene Baumstraße at its heart, bordered by Bach- and Försterstraße.
You won't stumble upon this street while on the hunt for a lively café, or while sightseeing on a bike or car. The cobblestones demand some slow, intentional exploration. But don't be fooled by its laid-back vibe; Baumstraße is far from being unknown or insignificant. Instead, it's a hidden gem boasting homely charms, ideal for those seeking a peaceful, residential atmosphere.
For the discerning Latin scholar, Baumstraße offers a retreat, an idyllic spot to find otium – classical peace and leisure. And who knows, perhaps this is where everyone else, too, can unwind and enjoy leisure.
Old Dresden and Its Lore
In Adolf Hantzsch's seminal work on Dresden, we learn that Baumstraße was laid out in 1856 and officially named the following year. Two houses worthy of note are found here: Number five, an impressive relic from the Gründerzeit, now converted into a senior support center partly funded by the Free State.
The corner of Bischofsweg tells tales of a guesthouse operated by Hermann Härtel, evident up until 1930. Regrettably, the guesthouse is now no more, but the home remains standing.
Despite some homes' fenced-in gardens that may cultivate a feeling of seclusion, the Baumstraße remains connected to the community. Senior support services and child-friendly activities such as face-painting and yoga can be found nearby.
Recently (on May 18, 2025), the neighborhood extended a warm invitation to all for coffee, cake, and homemade drinks on the gardens' occasion, as part of the Baumstraße flea market event.
Two Baumstraßen, One Enigma
Behold the unique construction of Baumstraße – actually, it has two different sections. The uneven cobblestones at Bischofsweg capture the attention of cyclists, prompting them to dismount and walk their bicycles, before suddenly transitioning into a sleek asphalt strip at number 16, just before Nordstraße. Intriguingly, Nordstraße presents another opportunity for an unintentional stumble, with its cat's head paving stones.
Even the local authorities are unsure about the construction intention behind this peculiar sectioning. A town hall spokesperson mentioned that the assumption is that the street may have been built during excavation works.
