Lommatzsch Receives Two New Art Installations

New Sculptures to Revitalize Public Arenas in Lommatzsch

On the market square of Lommatzsch in Saxony, two sculptures by artist Gertraud Wendlandt have been installed, thanks to a charitable donation from the François Maher Presley Foundation.

In the face of budget constraints in many rural areas, these kinds of creative partnerships are crucial for integrating art into the community landscape. Anita Maaß, the outgoing mayor of Lommatzsch, is one such advocate for blending art and urban space. The new sculptures will be formally unveiled on May 26, 2025.

These sculptures, both concrete pieces by Mecklenburg-based artist Gertraud Wendlandt, are meant to stimulate thought and learning for local residents. The town's mayor, Anita Maaß, hopes that passersby, especially children and the elderly, will be encouraged by these artworks in public spaces.

Maher Presley, the foundation's chair, considers rural areas, such as Lommatzsch, as underrepresented in terms of art and culture accessibility. To remedy this, the foundation has planned a new special exhibition in Lommatzsch set to open in the autumn season, displaying long-term loans and donations from the foundation. Initial concerns from city council members about the exhibition's costs were allayed when the mayor confirmed that the foundation would cover these expenses.

In 2021, an art fountain in Lommatzsch was vandalized during New Year's Eve festivities, serving as a caution to avoid such damage to the new installations. Despite the risks associated with outdoor art exhibits, the foundation remains dedicated to bringing art and culture to rural areas.

Lommatzsch's cultural scene will see further developments, as an upcoming special exhibition is planned for autumn. Stay tuned for more updates on the exciting cultural events and initiatives in Saxony and beyond.
