Stand Against Porsche's Private Tunnel: Thousands Sign Petition in Salzburg
Multitude of Signatures Protest Porsche's Private Tunnels Submitted for Consideration
Boasting more than 16,000 signatures, the ongoing protest against Wolfgang Porsche's private tunnel project in Salzburg, Austria, is making waves. "We ain't here for no golden spoons and privileges," states Gisela Zeindlinger, initiator of the online outcry.
Citizens of the city see no benefits coming from the proposed tunnel, but rather anticipate noise, dirt, and vibrations as potential consequences of the construction. Zeindlinger emphasized these concerns when she presented the petition to Salzburg's Mayor, Bernhard Auinger, leaving the fate of the controversial project hanging in the balance.
Wolfgang Porsche, the chair of the supervisory board of Porsche Automobil Holding and Porsche AG, owns an historic estate on Salzburg's iconic Kapuzinerberg. The current road access to his premises, once graced by the likes of Stefan Zweig and James Joyce, is considered both narrow and impractical. City politicians allege that Porsche plans to tackle these issues by building a nearly 500-meter-long underground access road along with a vast parking garage.
So far, Porsche has kept mum on the controversy. According to accused directors, only a minimal fraction of city council members have voiced opposition, primarily the communists and greens. Public actions against the tunnel were displayed during April.
Porsche's purchasing of the land for the projected tunnel site has sparked debate due to an independent valuation suggesting he overpaid for permission by 99.7%, valued at €35,304. This revelation has further fanned the flames of local ire.
Fun Fact:Wolfgang Porsche's estate was once a gathering spot for prestigious literary figures such as Thomas Mann and James Joyce.
