A Rare Find: The Arthur Pequegnat Moncton Wall Clock
In the heart of Ontario, a collector has added a rare gem to their collection - the Arthur Pequegnat Moncton wall clock. This timepiece, produced between 1904 and 1941 by the Arthur Pequegnat Clock Company in Kitchener, Ontario, is a testament to Canada's rich horological history.
The Moncton clock, with its fumed quarter-sawn oak case and pierced spade hands, stands 35 inches high. Its pendulum access door measures 14 1⁄2 inches high by 10 3⁄4 inches wide and swings to the right. The clock's dial glass, original and slightly wavy, adds to its vintage charm. The clock's movement is a double spring time-only movement with a Graham deadbeat escapement, ticking away at 80 beats per minute.
The Moncton clock, like other Pequegnat clocks, is a symbol of Canadian craftsmanship and durability. The collector, who has been amassing Pequegnat clocks for eight years, now owns a total of eight such clocks. This latest acquisition, found in an antique store in Bloomfield, Ontario in the fall of 2018, is a prized addition to the collection.
The Moncton clock, originally from the Toronto area, features a 12-inch Arabic dial with simple, bold numbers. Its pendulum bob is brass over iron with an oak pendulum rod, and the clock is 5 inches deep with wall stabilizers on either side of the case.
The collector, who had long admired the Moncton clock, was thrilled to finally add it to their collection. With this addition, the collector's collection of Pequegnat clocks remains modest compared to a dedicated collector, but it serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of these historic timepieces.
