Manchester City Council Transforms Ancoats into Green Oasis
Manchester City Council has unveiled ambitious plans to transform Ancoats into a pedestrian-friendly, green oasis. The final phase of a long-standing regeneration project aims to reduce traffic and promote active travel, with a significant increase in trees and sustainable surfaces.
The project, expected to complete by 2024, will see Ancoats Green serve as a green focal point. New public realm spaces are planned for Prussia Street and Jersey Green, with a wetland and lands planted with vegetation and wildflowers. Accessible play areas for children will also be created to encourage outdoor activities.
The council aims to make the area more walkable and cyclable. Walking and cycling routes will connect the community to the Ancoats Mobility Hub. The project expects a 76% net increase in trees and 32% of new surfaces to be made from reclaimed materials for sustainable drainage. Intelligent drainage systems are planned for Prussia Street, starting in 2027.
The transformation of Ancoats is set to bring significant environmental benefits, with a substantial increase in green spaces and sustainable materials. The project aligns with the council's goal to promote active travel and create more liveable, greener neighbourhoods.
