The local district administration of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Berlin, has announced plans to redesign Oranienstraße, a notoriously congested street in Berlin-Kreuzberg, transforming it into a 'stroll street' by 2024. The decision aligns with initiatives led by the district government and supported by local community groups.

Currently, Oranienstraße is one of the most difficult streets to navigate due to heavy traffic, frequent conflicts between cars, buses, cyclists, and pedestrians, and its narrowness. To address these issues, the street is planned for a level-grade redesign, without curb edges, prioritizing cyclists and bus traffic.

However, due to the lack of space, separate bike lanes cannot be accommodated without impeding bus traffic. To mitigate this, measures are being investigated to keep through traffic out while still allowing residents and Flixbus to use the street.

The M29 bus line, which consistently experiences delays due to the narrow street, will likely benefit from these changes. Additionally, the removal of motorized through traffic and current parking spaces will create more space for pedestrians in the future.

Intensive participation procedures with residents and businesses are currently underway to ensure the redesign addresses their concerns and needs. Other projects in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg can be found at a specified location.

In related news, Charlottenburg is planning the construction of the 'Opernroute Nord' bike path. A pilot project for safe turning is taking place at Platz der Vereinten Nationen.

It's worth noting that the start of construction for the route to Ostkreuz remains uncertain. The implementation of numerous new bike streets in Berlin has not yet satisfactorily addressed the issue of keeping through traffic out.

Despite these challenges, the redesign of Oranienstraße is a significant step towards creating safer and more accessible urban spaces in Berlin. The district administration hopes that these changes will contribute to a more livable and enjoyable city for all its residents.
