Maintain Tools for Longevity: A Comprehensive Guide

Maintaining tools is crucial for their longevity. Here's a guide to keep your tools clean and in top condition.

Start by removing dirt from tools. Use a wedge of hard wood to scrape off mud. Then, wash them thoroughly to eliminate any remaining dirt. For daily cleaning, quickly scrape off soil and wipe tools with an oily rag or plunge them into an oil and sand bucket before hanging up.

For extra preservation, soak hand tools in oil overnight, then wipe them off and let them dry the next day. To remove rust from steel parts, use medium-grade steel wool. For sandpaper, consider brands like Bosch, Makita, Einhell, Metabo, or Festool. For steel wool, internationally recognized brands include Brillo, Liberon, and 3M.

Rub wooden handles with fine sandpaper to smooth any roughness caused by washing. Apply linseed or tung oil to both wooden handles and metal heads using a soft rag to preserve the wood and protect the metal. Remember, never store oily rags in bundles in hot sheds to prevent combustion.

Thoroughly clean and de-rust tools at least a couple of times a year, or more if conditions are particularly muddy. Regular maintenance ensures your tools last longer and work better.
