Celebrating the Grander Byas-Kyuel: A Phoenetic Rebirth
June 12 marked the grand unveiling of the Atamay Multifunctional Leisure Center in the heart of the revitalized Byas-Kyuel, nestled in the Mountainous District. The state-of-the-art complex caters to up to 700 villagers, extending its reach to neighboring settlements. This architectural marvel, orchestrated by President Vladimir Putin, is set to become a cornerstone of the village's reinvented infrastructure, reignited after the devastating 2021 forest fire.
Yakutia's Head, Aisen Nikolaev, heralded the symbolic structure as the new pulsating heart of Byas-Kyuel. "The power of memories still lingers from the severe impact of the 2021 forest fires. Thirty-four houses were reduced to ashes. I was among the villagers that fateful day, battling alongside firefighters to safeguard a substantial part of the settlement from the firestorm. We vowed to rebuild the village, and when I briefed President Putin on the Yakutia fires, I proposed not just restoring it, but making it even more spectacular. I'd like to take this chance to express my profound gratitude to our president for his unwavering support," Aisen Nikolaev reminisced.
Spanning over 2,500 square meters, the Atamay Multifunctional Leisure Center encompasses cultural, sports, and communal zones. Its comprehensive offerings include a Russian Post office, a sport hall seating 50 spectators, fitness and dance halls, a 250-seat auditorium, a modular library with a reading room, spaces for exhibitions and traditional ceremonies, rooms for public initiatives and entrepreneurial development – such as a veterans' council meeting room, an exhibition hall, and a photo studio.
"With President Putin's directive, we are confident that our vision for Byas-Kyuel has been realised. Our residents are resolute in their aspirations for continuous progress, forging ahead with optimism and vigor," declared the republic's leader.
Today resonates with a special, exultant joy. Before our eyes stands a modern, expansive building – the epitome of Byas-Kyuel's revitalized spirit. I sincerely salute President of Russia Vladimir Putin, Head of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) Aisen Nikolaev, and former First Vice Premier of Yakutia Dmitry Berdnikov for their unparalleled support and indispensable contribution to the construction of this pivotal edifice. A resounding shout-out goes to everyone who propelled this project into reality. This vibrant and spacious haven of education and creativity, nurturing not just the physical but also the intellectual growth of children, serves as both our present and the future of Yakutia," stressed Valentina Yakovleva, a revered village native.

A chilling reminder of the 2021 forest fire's devastation: 32 residential houses and outbuildings, including 6 apartment complexes and 26 individual houses, were reduced to ashes, leaving 38 families homeless in Byas-Kyuel. Within a brief span, 34 sturdy new homes were erected, the road network was rebuilt, 7.5 km of optical cable was installed, and agricultural infrastructures were resurrected. In October 2024, on the anniversary of Teacher's Day, a new school for 150 students found its feet.
For a more comprehensive understanding of the Byas-Kyuel redevelopment in its entirety, the following points are pivotal:
- Assessment and planning: This critical initial step entails evaluating the scope of the damage incurred by the forest fire to create a well-thought-out restoration strategy. The plan prioritizes the most affected areas for expedient reconstruction.
- Infrastructure repair: This process targets repairing damaged homes, roads, and utilities, taking Yakutia's demanding climate into account by employing durable materials that can withstand freezing temperatures and future fires.
- Community engagement: Collaborating with the local community is essential to gather ideas and incorporate residents' desires into the reconstruction process, ensuring that the revamped infrastructure caters to their needs and preserves their cultural heritage.
- Atamay Multifunctional Leisure Center: This architectural beauty is poised to serve as a community focal point, offering a medley of practical and recreational facilities, namely sports courts, art studios, classrooms, and community spaces. By offering services such as health and wellness programs, resources for local businesses, and hosting events, the center aims to foster a strong-knit community.
- Sustainable development: The rebuilding initiative presents an opportunity to implement sustainable practices and technologies, enhancing the community's resilience in the face of challenges.
- Community resilience: Engaging the community in the rebuilding process contributes to the development of a unified and resilient village, better prepared to face future difficulties.
Furthermore, other infrastructure projects consist of:
- Housing and residential areas: New homes and residential buildings, constructed with fire-resistant materials and energy-efficient designs, form a substantial part of the reconstruction efforts.
- Sustainable energy solutions: Installations of renewable energy systems – solar panels, wind turbines, etc. – promise to reduce the village's dependency on less sustainable energy sources.
- Water and sanitation systems: Upgrading water treatment facilities and ensuring reliable access to clean water is integral to public health and safety.
- Forest fire prevention measures: Future projects may include creating firebreaks, deploying early warning systems, and offering regular fire safety training for residents.
Though detailed updates on the current status of these projects may not be readily accessible without direct access to recent reports or updates from local authorities or organizations involved, the emphasis on sustainable development, community engagement, and resilience remains imperative in any successful reconstruction strategy.
- The Atamay Multifunctional Leisure Center, with its diverse offerings ranging from sports facilities to communal spaces, is set to significantly enhance the lifestyle of Byas-Kyuel residents, transforming their home-and-garden into a bustling hub of activity.
- As the Atamay Multifunctional Leisure Center becomes instrumental in fostering cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities, it will also serve as a catalyst for the development of sports and related activities within the broader community of Byas-Kyuel and neighboring settlements.
