Kogi State Holds a One-Day Discussion on Social Security Measures
On September 10, 2025, a dialogue on the ACT Naija Project took place in Lokoja, Kogi State. The event, organised by ACT Naija Project, Kogi State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Bread for the family (Germany), Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), and the New Initiative for Social Development (NISD), aimed to strengthen government-civil society collaboration towards more inclusive and transparent social protection delivery.
The keynote address at the dialogue was delivered by Hajia Rabietu Okute, Commissioner of Kogi state Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. Her speech focused on the theme, Strengthening Social Protection Intervention. Hajia Rabietu Okute expressed concern about many Nigerians, particularly the most vulnerable, being excluded from social protection programs.
Hajia Fatimah Momoh, the Kogi State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, emphasized the need for an effective coordination framework for managing social work and social interventions in the state. She also expressed concern about issues affecting the elderly and destitutes not being addressed and urged the ministry of Health to address these issues.
Comfort Egwemi, the Deputy Speaker of Kogi state House of Assembly, highlighted the benefits of a robust social protection system for poverty reduction and lifting vulnerable households out of destitution.
The event was not led by the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Ebenezer Adurodija, but by Hajia Rabietu Okute's representative, Ojochide Ibrahim. A steering and communique drafting committee was inaugurated to handle discussions at the event, with the organizations involved in the founding of the committee including the State Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, the National Social Protection Secretariat, and UNICEF.
David Ugolor, the Executive Director of ANEEJ, called for improvements in social protection intervention in Kogi state. The Director, Planning Research and Statistics in the Ministry, represented Hajia Fatimah Momoh at the summit.
The dialogue attracted stakeholders from various sectors and the military, demonstrating a collective effort to address social protection issues in Kogi State. The Information Officer of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development is Joseph Adama.
