Review: Jack Wolfskin's Highest Peak Jackets - Windproof and Breathable Comfort in Wet Weather

By Ariel Kroon, Solarpunk Presents podcast

As the wet, windy, and chilly days of spring arrived, Jack Wolfskin's Highest Peak jackets were put to the test. Sent for review, these jackets proved to be an excellent choice for wet weather protection.

Upon receiving the jackets, a slight fit issue was noted. Though meticulously measured before ordering, the jackets arrived too large. However, this turned out to be a non-issue for those who enjoy layering bulky sweaters and scarves. A better fit for the average hiker might have been achieved with a visit to a store to try the jackets before purchasing.

Despite initial concerns about the lightweight nature of the jackets, they quickly proved to be both light and soft - a rare combination for a weatherproof jacket. The jackets are remarkably light, not bulky, and free of the typical crinkling sounds associated with outdoor garments. The pockets are deep and zippered, while underarm zippers offer extra ventilation on hot days. The hood is roomy and easily adjustable, providing shelter from the rain and wind.

In addition to its lightweight construction, the jacket boasts impressive windproof and waterproof properties. Featuring Texapore Ecosphere Pro Stretch fabric, the jacket is waterproof up to 20,000 mm and breathable with a rating of 15,000g/m2/24hrs. These features make it ideal for different weather conditions, from cold, windy days to warmer, more humid excursions.

Initially skeptical about the jackets' windproof capabilities, the reviewer soon found herself pleasantly surprised. Despite living in a city with frequent sharp gusts, the jacket held up exceptionally well, providing wind protection without sacrificing breathability.

Jack Wolfskin's commitment to environmental responsibility also shines through in these jackets. Engineered in Germany, their products are designed to close the loop on textiles and adhere to strict environmental and worker safety standards, as outlined in the bluesign materials standard. Moreover, the brand offers a repair service to extend the life of its products, a rare and commendable feature for a clothing brand.

However, readers should be aware that Jack Wolfskin is ceasing operations in North America, potentially making it more challenging for North American customers to find these products. Inquiries regarding this development have yet to receive a response.

All in all, Jack Wolfskin's Highest Peak jackets offer exceptional windproof, waterproof, and breathable protection for outdoor enthusiasts. The brand's commitment to sustainable practices further enhances its appeal, making the Highest Peak jackets a strong choice for environmentally-conscious consumers.
