Flood Disaster in Picanya, Valencia: A Community United in Love and Resilience

In Picanya, Valencia, on the 29th of October, 2024, a severe DANA (Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos) storm hit, causing heavy rains and high winds that resulted in extreme flooding. This atmospheric phenomenon brought disruption not only to Valencia but also to nearby areas [3][4].

The storm, which was later identified as the cause of widespread inundation, impacted both urban and rural areas, including Picanya. The intensity of the storm was a central factor in the disaster, overwhelming existing flood defenses and leading to significant damage and loss of life in the Valencia region [5].

In response to these devastating floods, the Valencian Government has since planned extensive flood defense infrastructure. One such project is the creation of two large riverside parks aimed at acting as sponges to absorb floodwaters and protect urban areas. The park, l’Horta Sud, will extend from the Albufera Natural Park to Picanya as part of an €150 million project designed to mitigate future flood risks [1][2].

Amidst the chaos and destruction, one resident of Picanya, Susana Pérez, found solace in the giving love of her community. She attributes this love to God himself. "God is love," she says, "and I saw that love reflected in the actions of my neighbours, my brothers and sisters in the faith, friends, and even strangers who came to help during the flood."

During those difficult days, Susana and her family were without water, electricity, and gas for several days. The flood was severe enough to fill their garage up to the ceiling and the first floor about 70 cm. The garage doors burst open, and the cars inside were washed away. The terrace swelled up like a balloon due to the flood. Despite these challenges, Susana witnessed many acts of love from the community. People came to help with food, tools, encouragement, prayers, and even removal of mud.

The telephone network was almost not working during the flood, but that didn't stop the community from coming together. Susana believes that creatures can reflect God's love to others. She saw this love in action during the floods, as people came together to help each other without expecting anything in return.

This heartwarming story of resilience and community spirit unfolded in Picanya, Valencia, and serves as a reminder that even in the face of disaster, the power of love and unity can help us overcome adversity.
