Back in 2015, the founders of StreetsBLUES took it upon themselves to spread joy to the homeless population of Hamburg. Each December, they host a Christmas party, uniting homeless individuals with local residents on equal ground. Heartwarming stories shared by the homeless are published prior to the event, along with a festive wish for a better life.
StreetsBIRTHDAY, a new project, aims to brighten the birthdays of homeless individuals throughout the year. A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to make this endeavor a reality. In the spirit of the Christmas party, StreetsBLUES hopes to create an online platform showcasing a birthday calendar, featuring portraits and heartfelt birthday wishes.
Together We Stand
Interested gift-givers can contact the organization, who will vet the recipients over the phone before organizing a gathering to present the gift. Nikolas Migut from StreetsBLUES envisions these parties featuring music, delicious food, and of course, the gift presentation. While the gift offering plays a role, it serves mainly as an excuse for the exchange between the housed and homeless community.
Ideally, long-term sponsorships could result from these heartfelt encounters. However, Migut acknowledges the difficulty of predicting whether genuine connections will form between individuals. As such, the parties will likely be held every one to two months, rather than on individual birthdays. This setup allows for a more relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere than a one-on-one conversation might provide.
Giving Youth a Voice
Portraits for the birthday calendar will be supplied by local students. According to Migut, the students will first learn about homelessness in school and then seek out meaningful encounters with homeless individuals. Students who wish may even join the birthday celebrations.
StreetsBLUES aims to raise 10,000 euros by June 5th to cover the cost of the online platform, teaching materials, and the first three birthday events. Migut hopes that this sum will allow the project to be self-sustaining in the long run, providing opportunities for the homeless community to connect and thrive.
