Homburg's 'House of Pigeons' Ensures Urban Coexistence
In Homburg, the local association 'House of Pigeons Homburg' has taken responsibility for the care and maintenance of two municipal pigeon lofts. The initiative, praised by deputy mayor Nathalie Kroj, demonstrates how commitment and practical solutions can achieve harmonious coexistence between humans and animals in urban spaces.
The 'Taubenfreunde Homburg' organization took over this task in 2015. The association currently manages around 100 pigeons using the lofts on the roof of the Forum and at the city archive. Since early April, these lofts have been cleaned and equipped in an animal-friendly manner. The association carries out species-appropriate population management, including replacing laid eggs with decoys to regulate reproduction. They also take care of injured or sick pigeons. Currently, the association is working with Deutsche Bahn to relocate the pigeon loft at Homburg station.
The association's chairwoman, Laura Drumm, explains that city pigeons are domesticated animals that have gone wild and need care and management. The initiative shows how commitment, responsibility, and practical solutions can achieve harmonious coexistence of humans and animals in urban space.
The 'House of Pigeons Homburg' association has successfully taken over the care of the two municipal pigeon lofts, ensuring the well-being of around 100 pigeons. Their dedication and practical solutions have been praised by Nathalie Kroj, the deputy mayor for youth, sustainability, and animal welfare. The association continues to work on improving the living conditions of the pigeons and managing their population in a species-appropriate manner.
