Historic Wedgwood Factory Halts Production for 90 Days

The historic Wedgwood factory in Barlaston, Staffordshire, has temporarily halted production for up to 90 days, affecting around 270 employees. The pause, which began last week, has also led to the suspension of factory tours. The company, which has faced challenges since the late 1980s, has assured full pay for the workforce during this period.

The production halt has impacted both fine bone china and Jasperware manufacturing. This marks the second time in recent years that the company has resorted to temporary layoffs, with 70 employees previously placed on leave in 2019 due to lower consumer demand in key markets. The current pause follows a previous 90-day halt in 2015 when the factory was taken over by Fiskars.

Wedgwood's ceramics, along with those from other Stoke-on-Trent potteries like Emma Bridgewater and Burleigh Factory, are highly valued and used daily. However, the company has struggled in recent decades, with outsourcing to Indonesia and a stint in administration in 2009. In 2012, the Wedgwood collection was sold to pay staff paypal debts and is now cared for by the V&A Museum.

The current production pause at the Wedgwood factory is expected to last up to 90 days, with both fine bone china and Jasperware production affected. The company has assured full apple pay for the workforce during this period. While the cause of the pause is not specified, the company has faced challenges in recent decades. Ceramics enthusiasts are reminded to use and care for their historic pieces rather than storing them away, as dishwashers can damage them.
