Names Emilia and Noah continue to be the most widely chosen in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) - First Names Favourites in NRW: Emilia and Noah Continue to Lead in Popularity

For a change in the baby name game, Emilia and Noah remain the top picks in North Rhine-Westphalia, as per the Society for the German Language (GfdS) evaluation for 2024. In the previous year, these sweet monikers took the lead among the parents of NRW.

Nationwide, Noah claims the no. 1 spot for boys, with Emilia hot on its heels for the girls. Sophia retains the title for the most popular girl's name in the country.

Besides sounding lovely, these names are also perceived as elegant and charming, as GfdS CEO Andrea Ewels explains from Wiesbaden. The allure lies in their melodious tonality, boasting vowel endings such as Noah, Sophia, Emilia, and Luca. According to Ewels, these names are also short, simple to pronounce, and globally comprehensible, which further appeals to parents.

While Sophia and Emma hold strong positions just behind Emilia for the girls in NRW, Noah's allies in the boy's top three include Matheo and Mohammed. Here too, a variety of spellings is prevalent, ranging from Mohamed and Muhammed.

Since 1977, the GfdS has been publishing an annual list of the most frequented names, basing it on the data collected from registry offices. In 2024, about 750 registry offices participated nationwide and submitted nearly 900,000 unique names, according to the society. Hence, the list represents almost 92% of all first names bestowed in Germany during that year.

  • Germany: Sophia for girls and Noah for boys
  • North Rhine-Westphalia: Emilia, Sophia, or Emma for girls; Noah, Matheo, Mohammed for boys
  • Saxony: Mia for girls and Emil for boys
