Fifth Installment of Greater Bay Area Arts Festival Commences in 2025

The fifth Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Culture and Arts Festival kicked off at the Guangzhou Opera House on September 16, 2025, marking a month-long celebration of arts and culture across 11 cities. The festival, jointly sponsored by four entities, including the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People's Republic of China, is set to bring together nearly 300 performing arts institutions from 20 countries and regions.

The festival's diverse programme includes five categories of events: "Arts in the Bay" performance series, "Resonance in Arts" art lectures, "Shared Aesthetics" art exhibitions, "Art in Daily Life" activities, and the "Radiance of Arts" performing arts fair.

The "Radiance of Arts" component will host the 16th China (Guangzhou) International Performing Arts Fair from September 25 to 28. This year's fair promises to be particularly special, with multiple world-renowned classic works set to be staged in the Greater Bay Area during the festival.

One such production is the hit French musical "Molière," which will be staged at the Guangzhou Opera House in October. Another highlight is the Greek National Opera's debut in China, where they performed "La Traviata" during the festival.

Several internationally acclaimed theatre groups also graced the festival with their presence. The Greek National Opera, the Russian Vakhtangov Theatre, and Matthew Bourne's troupe from the UK all performed for the first time in China at the festival. The Vakhtangov Theatre presented "Eugene Onegin" and "Uncle Vanya," while Matthew Bourne's troupe staged the all-male "Swan Lake," known for its innovative ensemble.

Local audiences have been treated to a variety of performances, with over 100 performances, 19 exhibitions, and more than 150 community events held during the festival. One of the standout performances is the Southern Song and Dance Troupe's "I Like You," which integrates Yingge Dance with musical theatre.

The festival began with the "Symphony of the Greater Bay Area" concert, featuring seven compositions highlighting Guangdong's most outstanding original symphonic works from recent years. Another notable production is the Guangdong Yue Opera Theatre's "Samsui Women," an inspiring story of female resilience.

The Shanghai Yue Opera House will showcase its Yue Opera adaptation of the literary masterpiece A Dream of Red Mansions, while the National Theatre of China presents the modern drama "The Yellow Storm."

With several acclaimed international troupes choosing the festival as their first stop in China, local audiences have had the opportunity to experience world-class art without traveling far. The Greater Bay Area Culture and Arts Festival is indeed a radiant celebration of arts and culture, bringing together the best from around the globe.
