Facing Financial Penalty for Parking within Personal Driveway
In Reykjavik's historic Vesturbær neighborhood, a resident, Borgar Þór Þórisson, expresses growing frustration over being continually fined for parking in his own private driveway. Despite the driveway's location on his property, the Parking Fund continues to impose penalties.
Þórisson notes that the imposed fines have become unreasonable, as parking restrictions extend until 9 pm, rendering it difficult to host guests at his home. He received his latest fine on Monday for parking in his clearly marked spot. In response, he has filed a reconsideration request, citing photographs that confirm his vehicle remained within the driveway's boundaries.
The resident's discontent intensifies due to a lack of response from the city regarding his appeal. The Parking Fund's recently implemented vehicle with license plate-scanning cameras patrols paid parking zones in Reykjavik, scanning for paid parking and issuing fines if necessary. In early April, Kristín Þórdis Ragnarsdottir, a Parking Fund specialist, admitted to mbl.is that the new system still experiences occasional glitches. However, for Þórisson, this advice has yet to yield any results.
"I have followed all the instructions, submitted everything, and still have not received a response," Þórisson laments, expressing his desire to simply park in his own driveway. As of now, the resident is awaiting a response regarding his reconsideration request.
