Exuberant anniversary festivities for a residential structure, spotlighting a notable feature
The Residential Facility 'Im Sonnenwinkel' in Hassleben, Germany, is celebrating its 100th anniversary on September 20th. Established in 1924 as a home for children in need and poverty, the facility has undergone significant changes over the years.
In the 1950s, the profile of the house changed to admit children with disabilities. Since then, it has been providing a supportive environment for individuals with intellectual and multiple disabilities. Currently, 38 adult residents call 'Im Sonnenwinkel' their home, living in small community homes.
Antje Lachmann, who has been leading the residential offer for 13 years, finds the long-term relationships with residents and staff, some of whom have known each other since childhood, very special and pleasant. Finding the right balance between preserving tradition and adapting to new challenges in assistance has always been appealing to Lachmann.
The day's celebrations begin at 11 am with a church service. At 4 pm, a glass art piece will be unveiled, which was created for the anniversary and funded by Aktion Mensch. The glass painting consists of six glass panels measuring 160x55cm each and will stand at the house in Birkenweg for at least the next 100 years. Residents of the facility have learned the fusing technique from artists Susan Jancke and Frances Zimmermann over a longer period to create the glass painting.
Throughout the day, there will be various activities for everyone to enjoy. Sales stands, a children's area with a bouncy castle, a bowling alley, and a slide are just some of the attractions. The festivities will be musically accompanied by the Naugartener Männerchor, 'Takt & Ton' brass band from Boitzenburg, CADILLAC BOYZ, and DJ Ecki. The day will end with a laser show after sunset.
'Im Sonnenwinkel' is integrated into village-community life in Hassleben. The facility, which survived the Nazi regime and World War II, has been under the trusteeship of the Stephanus Foundation since 1972. The organization supporting the creation of the artistic glass work for the 100-year anniversary of the 'Im Sonnenwinkel' residential complex is the Stephanus Foundation (Stephanus-Stiftung). Everyone is invited to join the festivities, which continue until an open end.
