Unconventional Pathways to Peace: The Corn Coffee Crusade

In an innovative stride towards reconciliation, the 53rd Infantry Battalion (53IB) has rolled out a unique training program for former rebels, focusing on enhancing their corn coffee production skills. Dubbed as the "Friends Rescued" (FRs), these individuals transition from combatants to peace-loving, productive citizens.

Lieutenant Colonel Rolando Vargas Jr., the 53IB commander, emphasized the objective of this training: "Empowering our Friends Rescued with a deeper understanding of corn powder processing will pave the way for elevating the quality and marketability of their corn coffee product, a fast-emerging symbol of optimism, healing, and self-reliance."

This training, fundamental to their livelihood rehabilitation program, represents a significant step towards their transformation from war-torn lives to confident, productive citizens.

"This isn't mere training; this is transformation," Vargas asserted. "The corn coffee initiative offers proof that peace is feasible and can yield prosperity."

On the 16th of May, this training was conducted alongside the municipal government of Dumingag and Agri-Enterprise Agriko, reflecting the 53IB's unwavering dedication to peace, reintegration, and community development.

FRs, who once wielded weapons, are now spearheading community-based enterprises, leveraging local resources like corn to craft high-value products like corn coffee.

Their "people's organization," bolstered by the 53IB, Dumingag municipal government, and various stakeholders, is gaining traction through capacity-building activities that champion sustainability, entrepreneurship, and self-respect in their livelihoods.

Dumingan Mayor Gerry Paglinawan expressed his admiration, stating, "This initiative reflects that when we invest in people, especially those given a second chance, the entire community thrives."

The endeavor is in line with the national government's holistic approach to how peace, livelihood, and innovation can coexist to revitalize lives and bring cohesion to communities long fractured by conflict.

Vargas reiterated their commitment to supporting the livelihoods of FRs, ensuring that peace extends beyond a mere promise—it becomes a way of life. (our website Zamboanga)
