Europe's First Mine Data Centre Set for December 2023
A unique data centre, Trentino DataMine, is under construction in an active mine in the Dolomites, Italy. This is the first of its kind in Europe, set to be operational by December 2023, and is partially funded by the European Union's Next Generation fund.
The €50.2 million project is being built 100 metres below ground, ensuring security and protection from electromagnetic waves. The mine's stable, dry, 12°C environment, previously used for storing apples, wine, and cheese, is ideal for data centres.
Trentino DataMine is expected to bring synergies with local industries. It will share heat and cooling systems with other storage facilities, promoting sustainability. The project is a collaboration between Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) and the University of Trento, with around 60 workers currently installing essential infrastructure like electrical and fibre-optic cables, ventilation systems, and power generators.
Trentino DataMine, set to be Europe's first data centre in an active mine, is on track for completion by December 2023. Its secure, energy-efficient location promises benefits for both data storage and local industries. The project's successful completion will mark a significant milestone in sustainable data centre development.
