Fell Audio: A Sustainable Hi-Fi Solution from Carlisle

Fell Audio, a new hi-fi brand based in Carlisle, Cumbria, is shaking up the industry with its commitment to sustainability. The company, founded by Luke Tyson, grandson of hi-fi retail giant Peter Tyson, is prioritizing British manufacturing, reducing carbon emissions, and using recycled and locally sourced materials [1][4][5].

Unlike many other companies in the industry, Fell Audio sources components from around 40 British manufacturers and distributors, instead of the usual four or five. This approach, while challenging, helps keep their products sustainable and affordable. For instance, they use recycled plastic from a UK firm (typically producing shower heads) for their amplifier components [5]. They also produce all PCB boards in the UK and manufacture some parts like volume knobs and feet in-house, which is rare for their price range.

Fell Audio's sustainability ethos extends to repairability and product longevity, aligning with a broader industry trend to increase sustainability by making hi-fi products that last decades rather than disposables [4][5]. The majority of Fell Audio's components are easily attainable, allowing for easy product repair within the same building where it was manufactured.

The hi-fi industry is slower in adopting sustainability practices compared to other industries, according to a representative from Fell Audio. However, the company's commitment to sustainability is expected to appeal to a new audience of hi-fi buyers.

Fell Audio's approach supports British businesses while also significantly reducing the company's air miles and carbon emissions. In a world where the World Health Organisation estimates that in 2022, 62 million tonnes of electrical waste were produced globally, with only 22% being properly recycled, Fell Audio's emphasis on repairability and durability is a welcome change. If you're looking for a product made in the UK in a responsible and sustainable way, Fell Audio is one of the few companies that can offer that.
