Enjoyable Labor Weekend Strategy
The long Labour weekend marks the traditional start of New Zealand's summer tramping season, according to Mark Sutherland Conservation (MSC) Chief Executive, Daisley. However, this year's weekend is shaping up to be a mixed bag of weather across the country, with MetService forecasting rain and strong northwesterly winds in the west and south of the South Island, and variable conditions elsewhere.
Daisley encourages Kiwis to make the most of the outdoors this long weekend, but urges good preparation and flexibility in plans. He suggests using MSC's free online resources for preparation, and taking simple steps to ensure a great, safe experience.
"This summer, we're predicting a high number of Kiwis will head outdoors, so it's important to be well-prepared," Daisley said. "Check the weather forecast right up until departure, and make sure your clothing and equipment are in order."
For those new to tramping, Daisley advises starting small and seeking advice. He also notes that there could be a lot of activity across many outdoor locations in New Zealand this summer, with demand for bookable facilities high.
MetService advises checking the weather forecast regularly, as conditions can change quickly. Western places may see cloud and light rain for a good portion of the weekend, while the North Island is looking less predictable, with lingering moisture around the majority of the island potentially leading to low cloud or fog in the morning. Temperatures in the North Island are on the warmer side of average, and most places will feel high humidity air.
The New Zealand Alpine Club has indicated that many newcomers in the past have been interested in exploring the outdoors, and expects that during this Labour weekend many newcomers in New Zealand will head into the mountains. MSC predicts a lot of new users will explore New Zealand this summer due to international travel restrictions.
To start your weekend planning, visit the Learn section of the MSC website for resources for your favourite outdoor activity. MSC is also urging visitors to take advantage of the Labour weekend to check their clothing and equipment ahead of a busy summer.
With so much promotion encouraging people to go outdoors for the long weekend, it's important to remember to prioritise personal safety. Enjoy the great outdoors, but do so responsibly.
