Emergency care in Solingen receives €1,000 donation from a charitable organization for children.
The Flohligsmarkt, a sustainable flea market in Solingen, Germany, has become a beacon of community engagement and charitable giving. Initiated by Luisa Skrabic-Sonnenberg and Susann Meister-Skrabic of the Ohligser Jongens association, this unique market combines sustainability and charitable purposes to create a positive impact on the local community.
The first Flohligsmarkt was held in March 2024 at the hall on West Street, and it was met with significant community interest. A total of 400 euros and numerous in-kind donations were collected, with many vendors donating unsold clothing to the clothing chamber. The proceeds from the stall fees were donated to the Solingen women's shelter, while the remaining amount was given to the Solingen Emergency Chaplaincy.
Inspired by the chaplaincy's work following the attack in the Solingen city center in August 2024, Luisa decided to donate to the organization. This commitment to giving back has continued, as the proceeds from the second Flohligsmarkt, which took place on September 7th, 2024, were also donated to the Solingen Emergency Chaplaincy. The Ohligser Jongens association contributed an additional 500 euros to the total amount collected, bringing the grand total to 1,000 euros.
The Flohligsmarkt has now become a firmly established community event in Ohligs. It promotes sustainability by encouraging the reuse and recycling of goods, reducing waste and promoting sustainable consumption practices. The market also supports local vendors and artists, helping stimulate the local economy and encouraging entrepreneurship within the community.
The events associated with the Flohligsmarkt serve as social hubs where residents can meet, exchange ideas, and build stronger community ties. The market has engaged volunteers and local groups, enhancing social cohesion in the process.
The Flohligsmarkt's model of combining sustainability with community and charitable efforts has created multiple positive impacts in Solingen, strengthening both social and environmental well-being. The market has contributed to the Ohligser Jongens donating a total of 1,500 euros to the Solingen Emergency Chaplaincy.
Looking forward, the next edition of the Flohligsmarkt is planned for spring 2025. The market continues to demonstrate a unique approach to community events, blending sustainability and charitable purposes to create a vibrant, engaging, and socially responsible gathering place for the people of Solingen.
Shoppers at the Flohligsmarkt, embracing a home-and-garden makeover or looking to enhance their lifestyle, can find unique and sustainable items while contributing to charitable causes. The proceeds from stall fees and additional donations support local organizations such as the Solingen women's shelter and the Solingen Emergency Chaplaincy.
