DS Smith facilitates the transportation of salads and herbs using eco-friendly, convenient fiber-based containers
In a significant move towards sustainable packaging solutions, DS Smith and Finnish greenhouse farming company Famifarm Oy have collaborated to develop recyclable, fiber-based transport boxes for delivering salads and herbs from Famifarm's greenhouses to Finnish retail chains and supermarkets.
The innovative packaging solution, designed for an automated packaging line, is suitable for both large and small retail and grocery environments. The boxes are designed to hold and protect products on the road, then convert into a display-ready tray without requiring knives, generating mess, or consuming time.
Jussi Loimusalo, CEO of Famifarm Oy, praised the new functional transport box, stating, "This new solution saves time for our retail employees, making the unpacking process four times faster than previous solutions." Each box features an 'ergonomic' hatch mechanism, enhancing the speed and ease of unpacking.
The packaging solution designed by DS Smith is versatile and can be re-folded after use, avoiding the need for extra adhesives or tape. This design not only promotes sustainability but also streamlines the process of repackaging and transporting the products.
DS Smith's commitment to sustainability and reliability was appreciated by Famifarm Oy. The company demonstrated an understanding of Famifarm's operations during the joint product development, ensuring the solution met Famifarm's specific needs.
In another collaboration, DS Smith partnered with Minerva S.A. to create recyclable, resealable Tape Back boxes for shipping luxury and ready-to-wear apparel and homewear. This packaging solution protects fresh products as before, but now speeds up unpacking and makes the process easier. The Tape Back boxes feature a locking mechanism in their crush lock or auto-lock bottom design and are sealed with 'easy-to-peel' adhesive strips.
Additionally, DS Smith's fibre-based alternative to plastic shrink film, developed in collaboration with Krones, has been nominated for a Sustainability Award under the Commercialized Climate category. This recognition highlights DS Smith's continued efforts towards sustainable packaging solutions.
Furthermore, Aagard and Energizer have collaborated to develop a one-piece, retail-ready case for use in transit and on the shelf. This collaboration aims to reduce waste and simplify the packaging process, aligning with DS Smith's mission for sustainable and efficient packaging solutions.
In conclusion, DS Smith's collaborative approach and commitment to sustainability have led to the development of innovative and efficient packaging solutions for various industries, contributing to a more sustainable future.
