Get ready to step back in time! The fabled courtyard of Dresden Zwinger, a top tourist magnet, is set to shimmer once more by the end of summer. According to a spokesperson from the Saxon State Property and Building Management (SIB), we're almost there, with most of the construction complete.

Two restored fountains, a media basement, and a new ramp upgrade the courtyard. The western half's lawn and pathways have been revitalized, revealing nearly half the space for the public. Construction at the Crown Gate involves manhole cover installation and replacing temporary surfaces with sandstone. As we speak, landscaping works are underway in the eastern half, slightly delaying the grand reopening. The total approved construction costs hover around 15.4 million euros.

Feast your eyes on this Baroque marvel, a symbol of Dresden truly, with the Crown Gate. The complex, dotted with pavilions, arches, and a long gallery, was a brainchild of architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and sculptor Balthasar Permoser. Built between 1709-1728 for Elector Augustus the Strong, it hosted princely displays, courtly jamborees, and housed the royal collections.

The preservation of this magnificent structure receives an annual investment of roughly 1.5 million euros by the Free State. You'll find new elevators and improved fire protection in the Glockenspiel Pavilion, along with conserved remnants of previous gardens and medieval buildings, hidden beneath the soil.

Archaeologists uncovered these marvels during excavations parallel to the courtyard renovation. They included riding houses, the ancient Zwinger grotto, and gardens. From 1991 to 2024, a mind-boggling 222 million euros were expended on the courtyard's renovation and maintenance, including the Semper Gallery, which complements the area toward Theater Square.

  • Hottest Spot: The revamped courtyard at Dresden Zwinger
  • Travel Warning: Some sections of the courtyard may still be under renovation, so keep an eye out for completed areas. Museums within the complex remain open throughout the process.
