The iconic Dresden tourist hotspot is nearing the end of its restoration phase, as stated by a representative from the Saxon State Property and Building Management (SIB). The renovation has seen significant progress, with two of the four fountains revamped, the media trench completed, and a new ramp constructed within the inner courtyard.
Greenery in the western half impresses with its mirror-like grass and restored pathway surfaces. Approximately half of the western courtyard is now accessible, with the main focus on finishing the landscape construction works in the eastern half. Installation of manhole covers is ongoing at the Crown Gate, followed by the replacement of provisional surfaces with sandstone.
Built between 1709 and 1728 under the reign of Elector Augustus the Strong by architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and sculptor Balthasar Permoser, the Dresden Zwinger stands as a testament to the late Baroque era. Serving as a venue for royal representation, courtly extravaganzas, and the display of the ruling collections, this architectural gem boasts 1.2 kilometers of masonry, 15,000 square meters of facade, terraces, staircases, and 698 sculptures.
Investments in the area amount to approximately 1.5 million euros per year, recently funneled into new elevators and improved fire protection in the Glockenspiel Pavilion. Historic discoveries unveiled during excavations parallel to the courtyard settlement include traces of medieval buildings, such as riding houses, the old Zwinger grotto, and gardens, now concealed beneath the surface.
Previous renovation and maintenance expenditures on the entire ensemble totaled approximately 222 million euros, including the Semper Gallery constructed in the 19th century. In addition to the Semper Opera House, the Church of Our Lady, and the Residenzschloss, the Dresden Zwinger is among the top tourist attractions in Dresden, housing three museums of the State Art Collections.
